The beauty of designing a home in which he intends to live “for keeps”, says architect Matthew Pullinger, is that he could ignore re-sale value, and real estate agent maxims about what clients want.

The result: his family of five shares one bathroom (although there has a guest loo downstairs).

Doing so “teaches you the importance of sharing, and communal living,” he maintains. There are also no walk-in wardrobes, or airconditioning (cross ventilation does the job) and no off-street parking, consistent with the modest living he aspires to.
